Coffee Addiction… Does It Really Exist?

Who doesn’t like to wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee? Coffee has the ability to give us that little "boost" we need to start the day off on the right foot. But is it just a simple habit or can it become a real addiction?

For many, coffee is an essential part of everyday life that helps ensure an efficient and productive day. But can we categorize this habit as a caffeine addiction? Headache, lack of focus, irritability– these side effects often occur when our body craves its daily dose of caffeine. So, is it a true addiction?

Caffeine

First, it should be understood that caffeine is basically defined as a natural drug found in coffee, tea, soft drinks and even chocolate. After ingestion, this stimulant affects the brain in only fifteen minutes. More specifically, caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, which acts as a psycho-stimulant. Therefore, we feel a significant energy boost which helps us in our daily activities. As a result, maybe you find yourself saying "I need my dose of caffeine” on a less productive day, or perhaps every morning.

Addiction or Habit?

The word addiction can often be scary, since it’s frequently associated with alcoholism and strong drug use. But is it possible that a strong habituation to coffee can become a slight addiction? It is actually what happens as soon as our body craves a dose! But unlike drugs, it's way easier to get through the effects of weaning yourself off coffee. After a few days without drinking our morning coffee, our body easily gets used to the lack of caffeine in our system.
