Harvest Guide: In Season Fruits and Vegetables Are Yours to Enjoy!

Eating local all year round is possible in all kinds of ways! What’s better than crunching in a perfectly sweet-and-juicy ripe strawberry in the middle of summer? Or complete a recipe with fresh and tasty Quebec asparagus in the spring? Nothing.

To help you enjoy the pleasure of in season fruits and vegetables, let's have an overview of all the essentials to savour!

May - Asparagus, Fiddlehead

May is around the corner when asparagus and fiddleheads start growing! It's the right month to harvest these beautiful, crunchy green stems. Asparagus have a very delicate taste while fiddleheads are more earthy - both are frankly divine with butter.

June - Radishes, Spinach, Strawberries, Lettuce, Green Onions, Herbs, Rhubarb

Then comes June! Radishes, spinach and strawberries are yours to enjoy. And that's a good thing because when combined, these three foods blend into a delicious colourful salad. You’re more into lettuce than spinach? No worries, it’s the season for all types of green foods! Add a few green onions to the mix with pesto, fresh herbs, a little bit of balsamic, the oil of your choice, and summer can get started!

FYI. Harvesting rhubarb is also a popular thing to do in June! Just saying, in case you’d be a fan of stalks dipped in sugar.

July - Raspberries, Broccoli, Zucchini, Beets, Kale

After the strawberries come the raspberries. And broccoli. And zucchinis. Then beets. July’s sunshine is truly magical and wild berries make it even better. It’s also BBQ time and putting local beets and green vegetables in your salad will just make this season the tastiest.

You enjoy a good green smoothie? Kale comes to life during the first days of July. Enjoy all the

August - Carrots, Blueberries, Cantaloupes, Tomatoes, Beans, Leeks, Eggplant

August has arrived and it's a celebration in the fields! Carrots, blueberries, cantaloupes, tomatoes, beans, leeks and eggplants have reached maturity with warm, sunny weather. Whether lightly seasoned or straight from the rack, these are always delicious.

September - Apples, Peppers

September and apple picking go hand in hand, but did you know it’s also the month of peppers? Both fruits (yes, pepper is a fruit!) are loved by Quebecers whether cooked, raw, as a soup or a sauce, in the oven or on the grill. Summer isn’t over yet!

Fall-Winter - Sweet Potatoes, Squash, Turnips

During the cold season (even if it’s freezing in Quebec), sweet potatoes, squash and turnips do not let us down. Roasted in the oven or mashed in a soup, they always come with a touch of comfort.
