How about expiration dates, are they still valid?

The infamous “expiry date”… how much food did you waste based on those little printed characters?  There are 2 types of people in life: those who wouldn’t dare opening the container 2 hours after and those who can easily eat it 12 days after. Which type suits your personality the most?

Good to know, you can find 2 different dates on the packaging. The earliest one would be “best before” so you can eat it with the best taste and nutritional elements. The second one “expiry date” tells the consumer they shouldn’t eat it for health issues. There are no death risks, but you might suffer from food poisoning.

The negotiable ones

Many foods have a stretchy expiry date, especially in the dairy products section. If you eat it after the suggested time lapse, the only risk you’re exposing yourself too is a very bad grimace and taste in your mouth.

Milk

If the milk container is still closed and airtight, the product is sterile and can be used within another 2 weeks after the suggested date. On the other hand, fresh milk should be consumed right away.

Yogurt

Take a look and whiff, you’ll know right away if you should eat that yogurt or not. This product can also be eaten within 2 weeks following the expiry date. However, the taste can be more acidulous.

Cheese

Cheese products enter the same category as yogurt.

Cream

It’s quite different for cream, since the product should be consumed latest two or three days after the expiry date. Food poisoning risks are higher, since there’s a lot more bacteria produced during the transformation process.

Eggs

The "best before" date usually indicates that the eggs will remain fresh for 4 weeks. If you’re not sure if they’re still good, there’s an easy way to check it out. Place the egg in a glass full of water, if it stays in the bottom it’s still good, if it floats it’s not good anymore.
